Arnab Mukherji in BMJ Study on Health Insurance Provision for the Worst Off in India

One of MACHEquity’s coinvestigators, Professor Arnab Mukherji, contributed to a recently published study in The BMJ on the effect of government-provided health insurance for the worst-off households in Karnataka, India. The study found that the Vajpayee Arogyashree scheme, which provided free tertiary care to households under the poverty line, decreased mortality rates and out-of-pocket expenses amongst recipient families. This study offers solid evidence that government-provided health insurance for poor households that cannot afford effective but expensive treatment can significantly improve population health.

The study’s abstract is available in video version through The BMJ‘s Youtube channel.
